Captain Willie Daniels II was born in Kansas City and raised in Southern California. He graduated from Metropolitan State University in Denver and began his aviation career as a flight attendant with United Airlines, where he served for eight years while pursuing his Certified Flight Instructor Certificate and building the flight hours needed to achieve his goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot.
Captain Daniels flew with United Airlines out of Denver, where he accumulated nearly 23,000 flight hours. He retired after a distinguished 42-year career, having flown aircraft ranging from the Boeing 727 to the 747, and culminating with the 787. His calm, precise approach to flying set a standard for others to follow, yet his legacy extends far beyond the cockpit. Following his retirement, he continued to serve United for another two and a half years in the Denver Flight Operations – Station Operations Center (DENSOC).
In the 1990s, during a discussion about the looming shortage of pilots and other aviation professionals, Captain Daniels noted the untapped potential in America’s youth. Guided by his passion for mentorship and education, he became the driving force behind the creation of Shades of Blue in 1999.
Captain Daniels envisioned all American youth—particularly those of color and from disadvantaged backgrounds—having access to these opportunities. From his own experience, he knew firsthand how severely underrepresented people of color were in the industry. Captain Daniels has consistently inspired young people and guided them toward their dreams with humility, patience, and wisdom. Through Shades of Blue, he built pathways for students of all backgrounds, especially those historically underrepresented in aviation, to connect with pilots, engineers, astronauts, and educators. Among his many accomplishments, Captain Daniels also became a published author with Shades of Blue – Creating Space in the Future.
